On behalf of a client we have completed a gift under the Cultural Gifts Scheme of a rare collection of medical and self-care objects to the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). The collection comprised over 450 fascinating objects, including leech jars, lead nipple shields, a silver caul case, ear trumpets, silver tongue scrapers and 17th and 18th century sick syphons. The Collection is on public display in the RCP’s Treasures Room, a space designed especially for it by the RCP’s architect, Sir Denys Lasdun.
The Cultural Gifts Scheme was introduced by the Government in 2013 as an initiative to encourage lifetime giving to UK public collections. In return for making a gift under the Scheme donors receive a reduction in their income tax, capital gains tax or corporation tax: at 30% of the value of the object for individuals and 20% for companies.
